The time was 1983. I received a grant from United Technologies Corporation to make this film and I got permission from the Air Force to make it without restriction. No one watched us or told us what to do. All they knew was that we were going to take a positive attitude toward the base and the people who worked on it and explore the reasons that they were so committed to working hard. You will see in this documentary air to air F15 fighter pilot footage that could not have been recorded without the help of those pilots.

During the Cold War, Advanced F-15 fighter pilots stationed at bases like Bitburg Air Base in West Germany played a crucial role in the defense strategy of the United States and NATO. Bitburg, located near the West German border, was a key site for American military presence in Europe.

Housing for pilots and their families varied from dormitory-style accommodations for single personnel to family housing units.

Schools for children, medical facilities and support services for families to create a semblance of normalcy and community.

The shared experience of living on a foreign base fostered a tight-knit community among the personnel and their families. Regular social events and gatherings helped build morale and camaraderie. Gyms, clubs, movie theaters, and other recreational facilities were available to provide downtime activities.

There were frequent interaction and collaboration with NATO allies for joint operations and exercises. The ever-present tension of the Cold War influenced daily life, with an underlying awareness of the geopolitical stakes.

The constant threat of potential conflict with the Soviet Union and its allies. The sense of isolation from the wider world, mitigated by strong community ties and support networks within the base.

The life for the F-15 fighter pilots at Bitburg Air Base during the Cold War that we witnessed and filmed was demanding but highly structured, with a strong focus on readiness and community support. The skills and dedication of these pilots were crucial to the defense strategies of the era.
