I got the chance to make this wonderful short movie on the pioneer racing aviators. The film ran at the Air and Space Museum in Washington DC for a special event held back in the late 1970s, where the old aviators came together to present their stories.

During this time across the USA and Europe, aviation organizations held races where daredevil pilots competed for prizes and gained the popularity of Hollywood stars and starlets. Tens of thousands of people came to watch them do crazy stunts that all too often ended in crashes and death. It was like the Indianapolis 500.

The aviation air races, also known as air derbies or air rallies, gained significant popularity primarily in the 1920s and 1930s. These events were crucial in promoting aviation and advancing aircraft technology through competition. They were held in various locations, including the United States and Europe.

The National Air Races began in the late 1920s in the United States. These races included a variety of events such as the Thompson Trophy race, the Bendix Trophy cross-country race, and the Women’s Air Derby. The National Air Races became a huge public spectacle, often attracting hundreds of thousands of spectators. These races were a combination of technical showcases and public entertainment, featuring air shows and stunts alongside the competitions.

Aviators like Jimmy Doolittle became celebrities akin to the rock stars or movie stars of their time due to their achievements in these races. Doolittle, who was notable for his skillful flying and technical prowess, won several races, including the Schneider Trophy in 1925 and the Bendix Trophy in 1931. His popularity was not just due to his racing success but also his contributions to aviation technology, including instrument flying. Other pilots, such as Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart, also gained fame through their racing achievements and record-setting flights, further cementing the star status of aviators during this era.

The air races not only pushed the boundaries of aviation technology but also had a profound impact on public perception of aviation, making it more accessible and exciting to the general public. This period is often considered the golden age of aviation, where pilots were lauded as intrepid heroes pushing the frontiers of human achievement.
