This is a clip from a one hour documentary my team and I made in 1990 for Turner Broadcasting, for Ted Turner really, about the State of South Carolina. We conducted careful casting to find the right folks to represent South Carolina.

This is Mirabelle Howe, who was a prominent figure in Charleston. She was filmed in her home, known as the Mirabelle Howe House. It became museum, celebrated for its architectural beauty and historical significance, providing a window into the life and times of Charleston's past.

The Mirabelle Howe House is a prime example of Charleston's historic architecture. The house features a combination of Georgian and Federal styles, which were popular during the period it was built. Its elegant design includes a grand staircase, high ceilings, intricate moldings, and original hardwood floors.

The house was meticulously preserved to reflect the period during which Mirabelle Howe lived. It offers insights into the domestic life of Charleston's elite in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The furnishings, artwork, and decor are carefully curated to maintain historical accuracy.

The museum showcases various exhibits that highlight the history of Charleston and the life of Mirabelle Howe. This includes personal artifacts, period clothing, and documents that provide context to the social and cultural environment of the time. The museum also hosts rotating exhibits that focus on different aspects of Charleston's history.

The surrounding gardens and grounds of the Mirabelle Howe House are also a point of interest. The beautifully landscaped gardens feature a variety of native plants and flowers, reflecting the traditional Charleston garden style. These gardens offer a peaceful retreat and add to the overall charm of the museum.

Charleston is one of the oldest cities in the U.S. It played a significant role in American history, including the Civil War. It is home to numerous battlefields and historic sites from the Revolutionary War, including Cowpens and Kings Mountain

The city boasts a mix of architectural styles, including Georgian, Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, and Victorian. The iconic "Charleston Single House," a narrow, single-room-width house with a distinctive side porch, is a notable architectural feature unique to the city.

Charleston has a rich cultural history influenced by African, Caribbean, French, and English traditions. This diversity is reflected in the city's cuisine, music, and festivals. The Gullah culture, with its distinct language and customs, is particularly significant in the Lowcountry region.

Charleston is known for its vibrant culinary scene, which blends traditional Southern cuisine with modern culinary techniques. Dishes such as shrimp and grits, she-crab soup, and Lowcountry boil are staples that highlight the region's seafood and agricultural bounty. The unique Gullah culture of the South Carolina Lowcountry preserves African traditions in language, food, and crafts.
Renowned for its seafood, particularly dishes like shrimp and grits, she-crab soup, and Lowcountry boil. South carolina is also known for its distinctive mustard-based barbecue sauce.

Ted Turner, a media mogul and philanthropist, has various connections to South Carolina. Turner is known for his conservation efforts, owning large tracts of land across the United States, including in South Carolina. He has been involved in preserving natural habitats and promoting environmental sustainability. Through his charitable foundations, Turner has supported various causes in South Carolina, including environmental conservation, education, and public health.

The "Portraits of America" television series of which this is one, produced by Ted Turner, aimed to highlight the diverse and unique aspects of American states and regions. Using high-quality 16 mm cinematography to capture the beauty and essence of South Carolina, the series won a Peobody Award among many others.

The series narrator was the well-known actor, Hal Holbrook.
