As the Lindsay Clancy murder trial continues, testimony has brought attention to postpartum psychosis. The Cleveland Clinic defines postpartum psychosis as a rare and severe psychiatric emergency that occurs after childbirth, with symptoms that can include sudden mania, severe depression, hallucinations, delusions and insomnia.

Dr. Ariadna Forray of the Yale School of Medicine says more education and training are needed to help clinicians recognize and diagnose the condition. Postpartum psychosis is treatable, but stigma can prevent some women from seeking help.
