These pipes carry rainwater away from roads, houses and built up areas. The rainwater should be clean but sometimes it can contain pollution spilled onto a road or tipped down a drain. Sometimes waste pipes from houses are accidently connected into surface water sewers and that might lead to wastewater going straight into the river instead of going to a wastewater treatment works.
