Swords of the Renaissance is an fencing event in Potsdam dedicated to the fighting systems of this period. The lectures are pretty short (30min) and should be an introduction into one specific topic. Further discussions and free play are highly encouraged.

"What has Destreza got to do with dancing?"

Chris of the Pfälzer Schwertlöwen – Historische Kampfkünste e. V. gave us a brief glimpse into his Destreza training and his project work (Cuadratura del Cìrculo – The Destreza Project) together with Malte Melms of Schwertkampf Osnabrück e. V.

In general, free movement according to Thore Wilkens P. E. T. (principle-based experience-oriented training) is a possible training method to promote fluid and continuous movements that, in his view, are helpful for fencing to Destreza. Chris also uses dancing elements in conjunction with (contemporary) music in order to constantly change the angles of attack and defense for the own advantage – best in a blade bind. This may allow a fairly relaxed fencing in the aerobic area. In addition, he deals with the thesis that movement patterns in Renaissance dance and fencing after Destreza have connections.
