On 19 September 2024, Clintel brought together an international group of scientists and experts at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) to discuss recent research on atmospheric temperature, carbon dioxide and the relationship between them.
The workshop opens with welcoming remarks by Eleni Vlahogianni, Dean of the NTUA School of Civil Engineering; Evangelos Baltas, Head of the Laboratory of Hydrology; and Ioannis K. Chatjigeorgiou, Rector of NTUA. They highlight the importance of open, unbiased research and a stronger connection between scientific findings and public policy.
Clintel director Marcel Crok then introduces Clintel, the World Climate Declaration and Clintel’s critical assessment of the latest IPCC report, The Frozen Climate Views of the IPCC.
Crok frames the central question of the workshop: What has caused the rise in atmospheric CO₂? Some participants attribute the increase primarily to human fossil-fuel emissions, while others argue that natural processes may play a much larger role. An informal poll shows that the participants hold sharply differing views.
Crok also discusses the temperature and CO₂ “hockey stick” graphs and explains the intended spirit of the workshop: not a debate in which one side tries to defeat the other, but an open scientific dialogue in which participants listen, examine the evidence and try to understand why they disagree.
