Years of monitoring the amphibians that call this park home have shown Dr. Melissa Youngquist just how well restoration projects work. Beyond boosting the survival of local wildlife, they help make our communities healthier, revitalize our nearby green spaces and create a more balanced ecosystem that we can all benefit from.
As a member of Shedd’s freshwater research team, Dr. Youngquist researches how human-made changes to habitats ripple through wetlands and shape the survival of wildlife. Areas like Marian R. Byrnes Park that were once used to dump industrial waste are blooming with life again after years of careful restoration work led by the Chicago Park District. Every amphibian, reptile and bird that we see return to these revitalized spaces helps prove that wetland restoration is worth investing in for generations to come!
