Decades of satellite data are helping scientists track how the Antarctic Ice Sheet is evolving. While much of the coastline has remained stable, some regions are retreating. Particularly in West Antarctica, the grounding lines -the boundary between ice resting on bedrock and ice floating on the ocean- have retreated dramatically, in some places by more than 40 km.
Using radar satellites like Copernicus Sentinel-1, scientists can detect millimetre-scale changes in ice height, helping track how Antarctica responds to warming oceans, and what it could mean for future sea-level rise.
