When Orion lifts off for Artemis II, carrying astronauts around the Moon for the first time since Apollo, a vital part of the spacecraft will come from Europe. The European Service Module provides air and water to the crew, as well as propulsion, thermal control and electricity to the spacecraft. Its journey from design to mission-ready hardware spans almost a decade and highlights the extraordinary effort behind the powerhouse of Artemis II.
Around 25 hours into the mission, mission control will give the go for the trans-lunar injection burn - the European Service Module's main engine will fire a powerful burn to send Orion and the crew towards the Moon.
