A timeles classic gospel hymn. I used the C6th tuning, key of F (treble to bass: E - C - A - G - E - C). I'm playing through a Peavey Session 400 amplifier, with my reverb set on about 7.
I normally play my lap steel with a larger BJS pedal steel bar, as I like to have more to grip with my left hand while playing. I like the larger and heavier John Hughey BJS bar. It works great when doing slants on my 24 1/2" longscale Jerry Byrd frypan guitar (as seen in the video).
This song is easy to play, old timey single-note style with lots of vibrato and some palm harmonics. The lei around my neck was given to me at a local Baptist church. I bought the cap while I was in Hilo, Hawaii in February of 2011. I normally set my guitar tone half way between muddy and bright.
It's a shame that children don't hear music like this anymore while growing up. Back in the 1930's through the 1950's, every kid wanted to learn to play the steel guitar, because families used to gather around the radio for enetertainment.
There was no music "industry" back then that commercialized everything like today. Country music has been hi-jacked by Rock 'N' Roll and Hawaiian lap steel is almost an extinct animal. I enjoy bringing a blast from the past back to life in 2011, and I sincerely hope to inspire others to learn the lap steel guitar. There are umpteen styles, songs and techniques that make the lap steel an incredibly versatile and unique instrument to learn to play.
This is actually a very nice Band-in-a-Box (BIAB) backing track that doesn't even use REAL instruments. BIAB mixes 3 different General MIDI instruments together to produce this beautiful symphony effect. Not bad for computer generated.
