Ein Schiffbruch, eine letzte bewohnbare Insel, Liebe, Tod und unbefleckte Empfängnis – das sind nur einige der Ingredienzen, aus denen das Nature Theater of Oklahoma ein Spektakel braut. Die auf übermütige Großprojekte eingeschworene Performance-Gruppe rund um Kelly Copper und Pavol Liska hat sich für ihre neue Produktion das Format Oper vorgenommen. Tradierte Motive werden übersteigert und bis zur Kenntlichkeit entstellt. Während die überbordende Handlung voranschreitet, stellen selbstreflexive und kolonialkritische Momente aktuelle Bezüge her. Der Schiffbrüchige wird zum Gefangenen gemacht. „Are you jealous / Of a slave? / A silly thing / For a king“. Unermüdlich und hoch fokussiert entlockt das Nature Theater dem klassischen Genre eine heutige Ernsthaftigkeit. Und: eine hemmungslose Fröhlichkeit. Inhaltlich lose auf Der fliegende Holländer von Richard Wagner basierend, bedient sich Burt Turrido. An Opera musikalisch bei Country und Western. Es wird ein Folksfest sein!
A shipwreck, one last inhabitable island, love, death, and an immaculate conception are just some of the ingredients the Nature Theater of Oklahoma has used to brew its spectacle. For its new production, the performance group set up by Kelly Copper and Pavol Liska, which readily embraces high-spirited large-scale projects, has turned to the opera format. Traditional motifs are exaggerated and distorted to the point of recognition. As the exuberant plot unfolds, selfreflective and anti-colonial moments establish references to the present. The shipwrecked becomes a prisoner. ‘Are you jealous / Of a slave? / A silly thing / For a king’. Tirelessly and with tremendous focus, the Nature Theater extracts a contemporary seriousness from the classical genre. And an unrestrained happiness. Basely loosed around The Flying Dutchman by Richard Wagner, Burt Turrido. An Opera borrows much from country and western music. Great fun guaranteed!
