Presented in 4K - Steam railroading is back on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad! After being sidelined for unscheduled maintenance work for the majority of 2023, WMSR 1309 is back operating excursion trains between Cumberland and Frostburg, Maryland.
Built for the Chesapeake and Ohio railroad in 1949, this 2-6-6-2 arranged locomotive served with the C&O railroad for only seven years, before being retired and placed in storage. After sitting in storage for countless years, and after being on display at the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum in Baltimore, the 1309 was purchased by the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, in hopes to use it on their excursion runs.
In late 2020, the 1309 was finally under steam for the first time in over 60 years. Test runs continued through 2021, and official use began in late 2021, and that continued through 2022. In mid-2023, the 1309 was sidelined due to unexpected maintenance of various issues on the locomotive. In October of 2023, the 1309 was officially back in service on the "Frostburg Flyer" on the old mainline of the Western Maryland.
