In February of 2022, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad hosted its first steam photo charter in over six years. It was also the first photo charter with Western Maryland 1309. After running on several test runs and Polar Express trips in November and December of 2021, the locomotive made its first runs for 2022 on the lead of a 12-car freight train. The trip was also historic since 1309's triumphant march around Helmstetter's Curve on Saturday morning was the first freight train pulled by an Articulated Steam Locomotive since 1953.
Despite a lack of snow, clear blue skies were present much of the two days, and the cold temperatures allowed for a spectacular show of steam and smoke in the fading winter in the mountains of western Maryland. So sit back, relax, and enjoy mountain railroading on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.
