For western studios to improve, they have to take notes from the eastern studios. The problem is that doing so require western studios to sacrifice something that defined them in the first place.
Western studios must ditch their mega expensive Hollywood-level hyper-realistic production in favor of something simpler, more stylized, and require significantly less money to produce. Nintendo casts a pretty wide net for their market with their games, and they don't look ultra-realistic. Their games are fun. That's all that matters at the end of the day, but fun is never a factor in the design philosophy of western games. It's always how to monetize the most out of their products.
Even in regard to monetization, the east are doing way better because not only they defined the monetization scheme that many western game studios copy, but they also cast a wider market by releasing their games on mobile. The western gaming industry are filled with elitists who refuse to dedicate themselves to develop products in the mobile market because they see mobile as just some device for casuals. It generally still is, but then the eastern gaming companies show that you can absolutely have a hardcore and dedicated gaming experience with deep and intricate gameplay mechanics at the palm of your hands.
I lost count of the amount of times my own viewers say that they've been playing mobile games, and these are gamers that play classic PC or console games. They also play mobile games too. They are so disappointed with what the AAA gaming market is offering that they chose to go for a gaming platform that they already carry around in the modern times. And the biggest part that makes the mobile market such a massive success for the eastern gaming companies: It is highly competitive. You cannot afford to make something mediocre. You need to make something really good to entice consumers and bring them away from the mobile games that they're already playing. That's not easy.
You know what is easy? Making the same AAA slop. That's what I see with western game companies. They have no desire to compete. They are comfortable developing games and wasting their money in the big platforms that can provide the most realistic graphics, but mobile gaming is way more restrictive in that regard. You must work around the limitations of mobile devices to still be able to provide a premium and entertaining gaming experience in a device that, at worst, can barely run a browser.
This is the state of the western gaming industry. They don't want to compete. They don't want to innovate. They want to stay in their comfort zone, but they are losing money there. They are losing their customers. They are losing their own investors as even Sony's own CEO is selling his shares. I wonder what could've possibly caused all that.
