This is my very first 3.5'' external hard disk teardown. I’ve cracked open a couple of external 2.5'' HDDs before (links below), but never a 3.5'' one. So let’s have a go at that vintage (2007) Western Digital 500 GB My Book.
First we do the usual walk around. Then we take the case apart and have a look at the two PCBs inside: IDE to USB and front panel. Finally we disassemble the HDD (500 GB Caviar SE16) and scrutinize its PCB too.
