This short video kind of goes hand in hand with what I was talking about last week – inner temperature and outer temperature.
When I was trying to finish my first novel I rented a little house in Northern California. I met a friend there who became a real mentor to me – Paul Rink. Paul was a writer and although he had a house, he spent a lot of time and wrote in a little trailer he had, which he called Moby Dick.
Well, we had friend in common, someone who’d had a tough life. An orphan during The Great Depression. A Marine in the Pacific in WWII, and then he spent some time in jail. By the time I knew him he was writing and things were going great for him.
I asked Paul one day over a cup of coffee, how do you explain it, going through all that suffering and now doing so great. Paul sat his coffee down on the Formica table, looked me in the eye, and I”ll never forget what he said; “suffering has never hurt any writer that I know of.”
So I’m putting this out there for anyone who has gone through, is going through or may go through a lost of “stuff” – “suffering has never hurt any writer that I know of.”
