This week we are painting the exterior of the handcar set out shed with peeling yellow paint over weathered wood.
We are using Ozark Miniatures vacuum formed siding primed with Tamaya "rattle can" spray primer, great for most plastics and simple to use. The siding is going to be painted to look like very weathered barn wood. Over the top of this is going to be applied a yellow paint thinner at the bottom and heavier toward the top. While the paint is still soft, a fine brass wire brush is going to be used to strip much of the paint away making it look like peeling paint. The brushstrokes of the brass wire brush need to follow the wood grain. Has paint on wood peels it usually peels away following the woodgrain. This technique really duplicates that effect well.
The trim at window casings or painted Tuscan red, here again, the trim up under the eaves and out of the sun and weather look very fresh where the lower areas seem to be somewhat peeling, but mostly splattered with dirt and mud kicked up by wind storms. Sun bleaching is being duplicated, using a dry brush of a lighter color red.
