This animation illustrates the effect of the increasing number of weather observations since 1850 on our perception of weather patterns over the Earth. It uses data from the NOAA 20th Century Reanalysis v.3, which is shown in short (10-day) clips every 10 years. Near-surface (2m) air temperature is shown in the color scale from blue to red, 10m wind by arrows, and precipitation in green shading. Black dots mark surface pressure observations, and the grey fog masks regions where more data is needed.
