On this day sixteen years ago (Feb. 10, 2010), a tsunami was generated by an 8.8 magnitude earthquake 60 miles outside of Concepcion, Chile. The tsunami waves first arrived at Valparaiso, Chile (approximately 205 miles from the earthquake epicenter), about 34 minutes after the earthquake. The tsunami caused significant damage and fatalities in Chile and across the Pacific.
This new animation illustrates the 2010 tsunami’s modeled wave propagation on a global scale. At NOAA PMEL, researchers in the NOAA Center for Tsunami Research, in collaboration with the National Weather Service, work to improve tsunami warnings and preparedness by enhancing measurement technology, optimizing monitoring networks, improving the accuracy of forecast models, and improving the prediction of coastal impacts.
