We’ve known for a long time that currents in the Solomon Sea were important in El Niño, but until recently we had no way to measure it. Now autonomous technology makes this possible.
The tool that we’re using is called an ocean glider. It’s this innovative autonomous undersea vehicle – a self-contained measurement system. In this video Dr. Billy Kessler from PMEL explains how these vehicles work, what they measure, and how this information is used to the benefit of society.
