In today’s video, we’re setting up a modified Suscovich-style chicken tractor in the garden—and it serves two big purposes.
First, we’re creating a dedicated breeding setup for Buff Orpington chickens so we can start producing purebred hatching eggs. We walk through setting up netting, adding a feeder and waterer, and installing a new roll-away nest box to keep eggs clean and protected. We’re adding a Buff Orpington rooster and hens, and in about 3–4 weeks we should start seeing purebred Buff Orpington eggs ready for hatching.
Second, we’re putting the chickens to work in the garden. After cleaning the beds off for winter, we’re using chickens to scratch the surface, eat bugs and worms, and naturally fertilize the soil with manure. This helps prepare the garden for spring planting while improving soil health the natural way.
Along the way, we also share some practical tips for managing chickens in a new setup, including fencing, predator protection, feeder placement, and helping birds adjust to a new environment.
