No Victorian work dress was complete without a Victorian apron. To try out some Victorian working class clothes, I used a Victorian apron sewing pattern to make up two different styles of aprons and and oversleeves, and then tested them out with my dear friend Pesky by baking the messiest things we could think of : Sourdough bread and carrot cake.
We don't have the kitchen facilities for actual baking in Victorian era (we can't all be Mrs. Crocombe ) but these modern recipes helped us find out how Victorian working class clothing felt and worked for the Victorian working class. Victorian working life was messy, and so were these recipes! We got flour and carrots and molasses all over our aprons and oversleeves, but the clothes underneath stayed completely clean. Not all Victorian clothes were impractical : these aprons and oversleeves protected us better than modern cooking clothes do! And, because Pesky knows about food history, I learned some fascinating historical facts about the victorian working class diet and how industrialization changed how we think about food.
