Were Victorian corsets torture, or were they the most comfortable bra ever? Let's see what wearing a corset every day was like. Were corsets really that bad? We've seen many corset myths debunked by dress history, but we tend to forget that period underwear isn't necessarily better or worse than bras. Bra problems are familiar and ordinary to us : tight bra or bra strap problems, issues with bra size charts . . . but we accept bras and bra wearing problems as part of everyday life, do our best with the bra size guide, and try to find the most comfortable bras to wear. So why would a Victorian corset be any different to the Victorians?

We have a fixation on weird corset history and tight lacing, but for most people, wearing corsets was as ordinary as we would find wearing bras. Just like us, the Victorians advertised and looked for comfortable corsets. Historical corsets were widely available, and historical corset makers used standardized sizing and a variety of shapes, just like a modern bra size guide. Even historical corset boning has a parallel in underwire bras! If we can accept the quest for the most comfortable bra with support and a good fit as being an ordinary thing, we can tale a more balanced view of Victorian fashion history and accept that Victorian corsetry wasn't better or worse than bras.
