We’re on a mission to document every abandoned home on Hachijōjima, a volcanic island 300 km south of Tokyo where the population has dwindled to just 7,000. Armed with maps, flashlights, and curiosity, we spent days cruising overgrown driveways and peering through jungle-thick foliage, looking for stories frozen in time.
One house looked like nothing: small, half-hidden behind trees, roof sagging under moss. But the moment we stepped inside, it felt like we’d opened a scrapbook no one had touched in years. Letters, photographs, perfectly folded clothes—an elderly couple’s entire life still in place. On the living-room wall: a line of firefighter commendations.
That’s when everything clicked. The man who lived here served in the same fire brigade as the owner of the last house we filmed. Same island, same department, maybe even the same watch shift decades ago.
From the outside it looks forgotten. From the inside it feels like they just stepped out for groceries.
