We found a huge vein of schist in the Arizona desert. In this YouTube Short, I show the layered texture, glittering mica, and the folding patterns that make schist such a fascinating metamorphic rock. This was one of the best finds of the hunt and a great example of mica schist out in the field.

In this field guide, I search a volcanic wash in central Arizona and demonstrate the waxy luster, translucency, fine-grained texture and botryoidal growth that can help reveal genuine chalcedony. Chalcedony is a cryptocrystalline form of quartz, meaning its crystals are too small to see individually. It commonly appears white, gray, translucent, banded like agate or covered in rounded botryoidal formations.
