We DROVE Across Mexico in 8 DAYS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In part 3 of our massive road trip from Idaho to Chiapas Mexico we cover the journey from Monterrey to Chiapas. It was a whirlwind tour of Mexico over an 8 day period, passing through the cities of San Luis Potosi, San Miguel de Allende, Queretaro, and Coatzacoalcos Veracruz, among many others. We learned some interesting things about driving in Mexico and share with you some of those tips:
1. First off the quality of the roads varies greatly in Mexico. Mexico has a large network of toll roads that run through the country. These roads are maintained and for the most part very good and safe. Any other roads however you have no such guarantee and it is not uncommon to have extremely large potholes even on highways. This is one of many reasons it is not advised to drive at night if possible. Toll roads vary in price depending on the distance you have traveled. In all we paid probably over 60 dollars in tolls to get down to Chiapas. Be aware that toll booths only accept pesos.
2. Like I already mentioned speed is not highly regulated in Mexico but the one thing that is consistent are topes or speed bumps. Speed bumps are everywhere around any populated area and they range in size from little vibrating bumps to mini mount everest's that will remove your muffler as you go over them. Always be aware when driving in Mexico as the road conditions and presence of topes can change in an instant. This is yet another reason not to drive at night. There's nothing worse than hitting a tope at 30 or 40 miles per hour and bottoming out.
3. Lastly there are some interesting rules when passing in Mexico. Forget what signs say... people will pass if they want to pass, solid lines or no solid lines, whether it's on a curve, over a tope, or speeding down the highway. Courtesy dictates that the car being passed move over to the shoulder to allow drivers that want to go faster room to get by. In this way a two lane road really becomes a 4 lane road with the shoulders used to get over, and the middle lanes used to pass. Pulling over to the shoulder does not mean slowing down either. It is not uncommon for slower cars and trucks to just drive on the shoulder completely, going normal speed. This is perhaps the scariest part of driving in Mexico, but actually does wonders for alleviating traffic.
It took us 17 days in total to get from Idaho to Chiapas and over 3000 miles of driving. In the end we made it to San Cristobal de Las Casas, where our adventure is just beginning! There are so many amazing places and adventures in store as we explore Chiapas.
