Mauston, Wisconsin is a small city in the south-central part of the state, a roughly ninety-minute drive northwest from Madison. Like any self-respecting Wisconsin town, Mauston has a Culver’s, a Kwik Trip with showers and refrigerated beer room, and a dedicated cheese store whose name includes the word “cheese” and some type of building; and while the most recent census showed that Mauston’s population sits around 4,300, back in 1949, when this story takes place, it only had about 3,100 residents in the city proper, with more scattered across the vast farmlands of Juneau County. On some of that farmland, about three miles northeast of Mauston, lived Opal and Raymond Bryant, who were renting a farm house on the Timon Davis farm. About two years previous in 1947, likely around the time Opal found out she was pregnant with their youngest child, Opal’s parents moved into the farmhouse with the family. Their names were Casper and Bergitte Halverson, although Bergitte went by “Helen” because names at this time apparently meant nothing. Grandpa Casper had what sounded like pretty significant mobility issues, so that left Grandma Helen as the children’s primary caregiver while Opal and Ray were at work and Sharon was at school...and that’s exactly what the day looked like on the afternoon of Monday, December 19th, 1949, when tragedy struck.
