Back towards the end of 2023, I was working my way through a number of missing persons stories when I came across one that was more than a little bit out of the ordinary. At the time, I was mostly looking into situations involving people who disappeared from trails in national parks, went missing while hiking with friends, or were otherwise in the middle of nowhere when they seemingly vanished off the face of the earth. Then I came to the case of Todd Geib, and found myself confronted with one that was considerably different. Todd wasn’t out in the woods when he was last seen. He didn’t step off of a trail somewhere and disappear into an endless wilderness. He was at a party in a small town in Michigan, and he was only about a mile from his home, with only one turn between the orchard where he said goodbye to his friends, and the safety of his own house. Searchers didn’t have to spread out across miles upon miles of untamed forest to find Todd. His last known position was just outside of Casnovia, Michigan, surrounded by a grid of farmlands cut into rectangles and squares by country roads with no more than a mile between intersections. Todd, if was to be found in the area, should have been found almost immediately - but he wasn’t. It took three weeks for someone to finally locate him, and when they did, the discovery only opened up more questions than it did answers. It was in the course of trying to wrap my head around all of the bizarre circumstances involved with this case, so different from the Missing 411 style disappearances I was so accustomed to, that I took my first serious look at what I’d heard referred to as “the Smiley Faced Killers Theory.” Welcome back to The Lore Lodge...
