Mount Rainier is a place of many stories. To the native Coast Salish people who have lived around the mountain they call some variant of Tahoma for untold ages, it was a place of great spiritual significance, with stories dating back to the last glacial age. To those who live around it, it’s a place of reverence for nature, guarded by the dedicated Rangers of the National Park Service.
To a select group of people who watch YouTube, it’s a place where a guy got chased through the night by someone who kept asking how to get to Bells Canyon, and for most of that same group it’s a place where a number of unexplainable disappearances have occurred over the last seventy years.
We’ve talked about a few of those disappearances in the past. Last year we covered the stories of Eric Lewis, Lowell Lynn, Joseph Wood Jr., and Marcella Ramisky (and that video is linked in the description for those who haven’t seen it.) Earlier this year we looked at the Bells Canyon story as well, along with a few other similar ones from the area.
So I’m not sure how it is that I missed two of the more strange cases of people who have gone missing on Mount Rainier, Chet Hanson and Karen Sykes. What caused each of them to lose the trail, why did they fail to get back, and what really happened to each of them? Welcome back to The Lore Lodge...
