There’s ethical true crime, true crime, makeup tutorial true crime, and then - at the very bottom of the barrel - whatever the hell Netflix’s Monster: Ed Gein series is. I know that may sound like a strong statement, but when it comes to the complex ethics surrounding the true crime genre, this has to be one of the most egregious cases of a major network or studio production just completely throwing morality to the wind. It’s not just the fact that they play a little fast and loose with their dramatization of events, or that they misrepresent a considerable number of details, or even that they completely fabricated a storyline in which Ed Gein helps to catch a notorious serial killer. None of that is ideal for something marketed as a biopic, but what really drove me to make this video was the way this series takes the names and stories of real human beings, most of them only a few decades beyond their deaths, and completely rewrites them in such a way that is not just inaccurate, but insulting to their memory.
