Was Tatooine once covered in water? In The Book of Boba Fett, the Tusken Raider chief mentioned a time before the oceans of Tatooine dried up. That was actually part of Tatooine’s history in the Star Wars Legends days. None of what I’m about to say is still true in canon, at least for now, but in Legends Tatooine was covered in oceans and plantlife and inhabited by a people called the Kumumgah. When they started to colonize other planets they caught the eye of the Rakatan Infinite Empire, who conquered and enslaved Tatooine. The Kumumgah rebelled and fought against the Rakata, and in response their planet was bombarded from orbit until its soil turned to sand and its seas boiled away. Tatooine became a harsh desert and over time the Kumumgah evolved into two separate species: the Tusken Raiders and the Jawas. You can read that story in the Dawn of the Jedi: Force Storm comics from 2012. Again, that’s not a canon tale, but the Rakatan invaders have been mentioned in Andor on multiple occasions, so maybe they still played a role in changing Tatooine’s climate.
