With winter now upon us, I wanted to show how I use my WC with the netting attached underneath to trap more heat inside, block more wind, and create a vent thats by my head on the zipper side. This vent allows any condensation or moisture from my breath and body to rapidly escape to prevent build up inside which could freeze on/in my quilts and decrease the effectiveness of my quilts on longer multi day trips or during use in extreme conditions since a build up of moisture will lead to a loss of loft even on treated down eventually, and less loft = less heat retention = less warmth. So this is my fix since I didn't order a winter cover with my XLC but bought one from another Hammock Forums member after I got the hammock. Warbonnet has now come out with their XLC model 2.0, and offers a winter cover that has built in mesh vents and a UQP that can be zipped together to create a sock of sorts or used separately. If you need a vent to use your existing XLC w/ winter cover and can't afford or just dont need to buy the newer model than this simple, zero cost mod is for you. As you'll see it blocks just about ALL the wind from getting in, as when I was filming inside I couldn't feel even the strongest gusts come through the cover+net combo. This is a HUGE advantage when its cold and windy. Also, the added waterproofing allows me to extend its range and allow me to not use a tarp when I might have needed to in some conditions before while still keeping its breathability since I now have a vent....me and my quilts are dry inside during heavy fog, light snow & rain etc. So, let me know what you think, ,and as always you can check out Hammockforums.net for info on EVERYTHING hammock related !!!
