Here's the results from leaving it out in a heavy rain....
It rained hard last night for about 2 hours with light rain before and after, total storm time was about 3 hours give or take. I came out this morning not knowing what to expect. It stayed bone dry during an hour long passing light-moderate shower the other day , but I hadn't yet tested it under "extreme" conditions. Now, when I say "extreme" , I don't mean hurricane force winds or a Nor'easter that produces sustained heavy wind and gail force wind with sideways blowing rain. I mean a normal, summer thunderstorm that you would see anywhere while you were out hiking or camping. Any fail is still a fail when it comes to a tent that comes seam sealed as a reasonable person should interpret that to mean it's watertight and suitable to use under "normal" adverse weather conditions. The storm last night was just that, normal.
Now, I said all that to say this : I'm still happy with the product. It didn't end up like a swimming pool inside which means that the problem is definitely fixable. Sure , I would have been BEYOND PISSED had this happened while I was using it in the field, but that's why I make these vids : so you don't end up cold and wet in the middle of the night 5 miles from the nearest dry shelter!.Any fail is still a fail and I will be reaching out to OneTigris to see what their position is on the matter. It could have been a Q.C issue at OneTigris , a failure of the seam sealing tape itself due to QC where it was made, a design flaw of the seam , hook and net tie back loops or 15 other things so I that's why I want to contact OneT directly before I call the product a total bust.
All of the other reviews I've seen haven't said she about it leaking so I want to give it the benefit of the doubt in this particular case. All in all its been great. I do love the design , it's a neat little cross between an iconic military pup tent + baker tent , and if you add in the included space blanket and some clear plastic from the dollar store , it could also be a quasi-super shelter of sorts. The price point vs quality is definitely favorable. The only " negatives" or " quirks" to me other than the leak are the zippers not extending to the peaks which makes an awkward bend when it's in " porch mode" , the neon green color of the grosgrain tabs and guy out lines and the lack of an interior zipped on the side windows. Switching out the supplied lines for reflective black Dutchwire was simple and I kept the Line locs since they are glow in the dark and fit the Dutchwire perfectly. The grosgrain tabs that are on each side of the ridgeline seam for putting it up are both black with a reflective stripe, this would have been much better for the rest of them than the bright neon green color I feel and the only way to easily fix it would be to use a black permanent marker I think, maybe. The design of the 2 side zippers baffles me though.... surely it could go up higher than it does or have been designed so it doesn't inhibit the tightness of the awning like it does now. The side windows exterior one-sided zipped placement also could have easily and cheaply been designed to function much, much better to not require the user to exit the tent, potentially in the rain, to close the window. A small tab in the middle to be used to pull the window flap out when it's closed to allow air flow up from the bottom would also have been a cheap and simple design change that would increase its useability 10 fold.
SO, in conclusion..... Did it fail? YES. The seams on the top did not hold up under a normal summer thunderstorm. Could / should it have been designed a little better in a few places? YES, but it's flaws are few and for the price it's certainly worth the extra time to re- seam seal it and switch out the guy lines. Would I still recommend it to you? POSSIBLY.... It all depends on what I hear back from OneTigris and whether or not the failures/quirks overcome the low price and positive features when it comes to how YOU will.use it and your skill level to fix it. I will continue to test this product and post the results here as well as what I hear from OneTigris.There are NO free passes here, and I want you to to see honest and up close reviews on everything I test.
