One of the great London novels, Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf was published a hundred years ago in May. Written between 1922-24, Mrs Dalloway is not only a classic London novel but also a great book of walking London and an exploration of the power of place. The book is set over a single day in June 1923, so I set out on 14th June following a walking route from the Virginia Woolf society's website virginiawoolfsociety.org.uk/resources/a-mrs-dalloway-walk-in-london
The walk starts in Dean's Yard Westminster, goes along Great College Street, over Victoria Street, across St. James's Park to Piccadilly where Mrs Dalloway looks in the window of Hatchards bookshop. In Old Bond Street she buys flowers and her path crosses that of Septimus Smith and his wife Lucretia. We retraces their walks over Oxford Street to Harley Street and then to Regent's Park where the walk ends.
