New Zealand’s Waikato Hospital has sent staff a memo requiring them to speak English in all clinical settings.

Health Minister Dr Shane Reti believes staff should be allowed to speak their first language wherever it doesn’t compromise care.

Mr Reti’s comments mirror those of Labour leader Chris Hipkins who claims the memo is “discriminatory and wrong”.
