In this video, we compare two tiffany style 6 prong diamond rings and see how they look like when worn on a finger. The main purpose of this video is for you to see whether you can notice differences between a VVS and VS diamond. Do you need an excessively high diamond clarity in order for it to sparkle and look beautiful? Or would a VS diamond look completely identical when it comes to visual appearance.
First, let’s take a look at what the clarity grades represent in order to find out the differences between VVS and VS grades. GIA separates the different categories to represent different technicalities in inclusion grading.
For VVS (Very Very Slightly Included – VVS1 & VVS2), the grade only allows for minute inclusions that are EXTREMELY difficult to see at 10x magnification.
For VS (Very Slightly Included – VS1 & VS2), the grade allows inclusions that are somewhat hard to see under 10X magnification.
The types of inclusions allowable for VVS and VS also differ. For example, you will only benign inclusions like pinpoints, needles, internal graining or clouds in VVS diamonds. For VS diamonds, crystals, knots or distinct clouds, feather and graining are typically what you will find.
For most beginners, they have a misconception that the higher the clarity rating, the better the diamond looks. That’s not true because a higher clarity grade may not be worth the expense. In most cases, a VS diamond can look just as good as a VVS diamond and this video is a great example to showcase that.
So, which should you choose and which is better between a VVS diamond or a VS diamond? It depends on your personal tastes and if you are buying step cut diamonds at large carat sizes, that’s when a VVS clarity grade can have practical advantages to keep the diamond eyeclean.
If budget is something that affects your buying decision, then consider getting a VS diamond instead of a VVS diamond as it is less expensive. The savings you can get between these grading categories can be as high as 20% and in absolute terms, this can translate to hundreds if not, thousands of dollars in savings.
And it makes sense too. You could use this money that is saved towards a larger looking diamond or a better colored diamond or even a more elaborate ring setting.
