IARI, New Delhi, conducted a session on "Placing Taxonomy on a Viable Platform to Manage Insect Diversity and its Decline" as part of the workshop "The Grand Challenges: Insect Decline, Causes, and Consequences," a national-level seminar for the college students held on November 28 and 29, 2024.
Professor Ramamurthy highlighted taxonomy's role in addressing insect biodiversity decline and pest management. He emphasised the evolution of taxonomy from a traditional classification approach to a dynamic, multidisciplinary field incorporating molecular biology, ecology, and behavioural studies. He illustrated how integrating diverse scientific approaches can enhance taxonomy's relevance in tackling modern challenges, including pest outbreaks and insect resistance. He advocated for a holistic, multi-dimensional taxonomy to manage biodiversity effectively and support sustainable solutions for ecological challenges.
