With S, the air flows quietly with no vibration. With Z, you can feel your vocal cords buzzing. That is the difference between a voiceless and a voiced consonant, and it is one of the three key features that defines every English consonant sound.

Once you can feel and hear this difference, your pronunciation becomes more accurate and intentional.
