VIASM was created to provide a world-class academic environment. Unlike most research institutes, it was designed as a highly adaptive model for a developing country. Operating without a permanent body of resident researchers, a small team, and limited resources, VIASM delivers outsized impact through research, talent development, international collaboration, and efforts to reduce brain drain.
Referred to as A Home for Vietnam's Mathematics, VIASM is a hub for Vietnam's mathematical community, supporting both high-level research and the National Program for Mathematics Development across all levels from K-12 education to postgraduate training and frontier research.
A core driver of VIASM’s success is Prof. Ngo Bao Chau. His Fields Medal gave Vietnamese mathematics new visibility, confidence, and goals. For 15 years, he has shaped VIASM's scientific direction, creating opportunities for students to study abroad, and inspiring many overseas Vietnamese mathematicians to reconnect and contribute to Vietnam's scientific development.
Through research, education, scientific exchange, and mathematics outreach, the Institute strengthens Vietnam’s scientific capacity, nurtures future generations of talent, drives innovation, and enhances the global presence and impact of Vietnamese mathematics. As well as connecting Vietnamese researchers abroad with the domestic scientific community.
VIASM is increasingly evolving from a national hub into a regional one. Building on its international activities across Southeast Asia, the Institute is exploring new initiatives to strengthen connections among mathematical institutes across Asia and support the development of a more cohesive and vibrant regional research community.
By connecting mathematicians across Vietnam and the world, nurturing excellence at every level, and strengthening regional partnerships, VIASM helps shape the future of mathematics.
