Quantum science is changing the world – from quantum computing to quantum communication, theories that were posited over a century ago are now making a major impact in a number of areas. But the scientific revolutions brought about by these theories began in mathematics, and its mathematics that will continue to drive them forward.
The Centre for Quantum Mathematics at the University of Southern Denmark is founded on this principle. Though SDU has long had expertise in the area, the founding of the centre in recent years by Professor Jørgen Ellegaard Andersen has reinvigorated the field, and led to recruitment of a number of major talents in quantum mathematics, including Vivek Shende, who focuses on algebraic geometry and symplectic geometry.
It's an exciting time for quantum science in Denmark especially, as the Danish government has developed two major strategies to push the growth and application of quantum science in the country. This includes the creation of a Danish Quantum Internet, a project that SDU is heavily involved in, while the Centre is funded with a centre of excellence grant from the government.
As such, application areas for the research at the Centre are numerous – with research into quantum algorithms having an impact on sectors including medicine, energy and finance. The University is also driving application and collaboration with academia and industry through the newly launched Quantum Hub – while SDU spinout companies like Qpurpose are thriving in this environment.
At the same time, building quantum competence in Denmark – and globally – is key, and whether connecting experience mathematicians to applied physicists, or training the next generation of quantum mathematicians, the Centre is focused on this. This includes a newly launched Quantum Computing Masters course.
The future is extremely exciting at the Centre for Quantum Mathematics. With a mission to become one of the premier quantum mathematics groups in the world, the centre is driven to collaborate with applied scientists, industry as well as training a new generation to make the next big revolutions in mathematics, and to keep changing the world again.
