At 50 high quality metal and 3 gears, the vending machine is pretty expensive, but surprisingly worth it.
I found I had the most success buying pipes, springs, and semi bodies for a waterpipe or 250 metal frags each.
I've been finding myself needing more of those components to make revolvers and semi rifles, and so the vending machine has helped. If you get your vending machine running early in the wipe, the deals are also good for new players in your area because they can just hit barrels until they get your components and then use your 250 metal frags to craft a sheet metal door and a code lock.
I've run vending machines on two wipes now. On the last one, I managed to get people to sell me more than 10 pipes and probably 5 springs and 5 semi bodies. For my needs as a solo player, that's well worth the investment to me. Vending machines are great to use as a solo player because there are only a set amount of customers in each area, and so you cannot cover an entire group's needs with just the vending machine but you can take care of a lot of your needs if you are playing solo.
Solo players with vending machines can also make a killing on selling gears to clans. I don't currently use gears for anything apart from the vending machine, but clans are desperate for gears to make armored doors and ladder hatches. On the last wipe, I sold about 14 gears for 250 metal frags each. 3500 metal frags in exchange for something that I wasn't even going to use anyway is a pretty good deal.
