This is a performance of Variations on a Theme by Sor by Miguel Llobet from my first Masters Recital.
Miguel Llobet was a virtuosic classical guitarist and composer of the late 19th and early 20th century. He studied under the likes of Francisco Tarrega and his compositional style is very much influenced by Spanish traditions. Variations on a Theme by Sor, also commonly referred to as La Folia Variations, is an incredibly virtuosic piece by Llobet and is today a staple piece in guitar competitions all around the world. It explores a wide variety of the different techniques and capabilities of the guitar. Despite the title, the theme upon which this piece is based on was not actually composed by Sor and is instead based on Sor’s arrangement of La Folia de España. The theme itself has no known composer as it is a traditional Spanish chord progression dating all the way back to the 15th and 16th centuries.
