Abstract: Sustainable Farms and Fields is a grant program that makes it easier and more affordable for farmers and ranchers to adopt more climate-smart practices that increase soil carbon or reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In fiscal year 2023, the program faced the challenge of allocating $1.8 million in funding among 83 applications totaling $3.4 million in requests. To address this challenge and optimize the climate benefits of the program, we developed the Washington Climate Smart Estimator (WaCSE) using R and Shiny.
Integrating national climate models and datasets, WaCSE offers an intuitive, regionally specific user interface, enabling users to compare the climate benefits of different conservation practices across Washington's diverse counties and farm sizes. Users can explore GHG estimates in interactive tables and plots, generate spreadsheets and custom reports, and convert emissions into easily understandable metrics like home energy use and gasoline consumed.
