Global News | US protectionist policies could cost Canadian economy $45B a year, experts warn @globalnews | Uploaded October 2024 | Updated October 2024, 1 week ago.
With less than a month to go before the U.S. presidential election, several economists have warned of the potential damage that increasingly protectionist American policies would usher in. A new Canadian Chamber of Commerce report has said protectionist policies, such as Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs, could impact economies negatively and stoke inflation on both sides of the border.
The report authored by Trevor Tombe, an economics professor at the University of Calgary, said while most Canadians recognize the importance of trade with the U.S., Americans don’t have the same understanding about how intricately the two countries are connected particularly at a time of geopolitical uncertainty.
Both presidential candidates have campaigned on protectionist policies that could cause uncertainty for Canadian trade. Canadian officials and business groups have been meeting with Democratic and Republican counterparts across the U.S., making sure Canada is prepared for any outcome of the November election.
Global’s Anne Gaviola reports.
