Following twin 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that struck off the northern coast of Venezuela on June 24, 2026, the United States launched a major joint humanitarian operation under U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) at the request of the Venezuelan government.
Central to this effort was the U.S. Marine Corps, operating as part of Littoral Combat Force 24 (LCF-24). The task force rapidly pivoted from scheduled security missions in the Caribbean to deliver emergency aid, search-and-rescue teams, and infrastructure support to heavily impacted coastal areas such as La Guaira and Caracas.
Operating aboard Navy amphibious transport docks (such as the USS Fort Lauderdale and USS San Antonio), Marines and Sailors delivered pallets of drinking water, medical supplies, and emergency gear directly to the Port of La Guaira and isolated coastal communities via landing craft and military trucks.
