The deployment of German tanks and armored vehicles to Lithuania represents a historic shift in European defense. Under the framework of NATO’s forward defense strategy, Germany has established the 45th Armored Brigade ("Panzerbrigade 45"), also colloquially called the Lithuania Brigade.
This marks the first time since World War II that German forces are being permanently stationed outside Germany. The brigade is designed to reach full operational capability with approximately 4,800 soldiers and 2,000 military vehicles permanently based on NATO's eastern flank.
