The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has rescinded the 2009 CO2 Endangerment finding on legal and scientific grounds. This legislation was the reason for all the laws and regulations limiting greenhouse gases from vehicles and industry. This video explainer discusses the implications of this regulatory change for Canada, as well as explaining some of the background. For instance, the Social Cost of Carbon (SCC) is a calculation used to set carbon tax rates. Canada's SCC policies were directly aligned with the SCC of the US EPA. Canada continues on a path to be a 'climate leader' while the US abandons such regulatory restrictions. The US EPA CO2 Endangerment Finding was also the fundamental rationale for developing electric vehicles (EVs). Where does this leave Canada, given that our auto industries are intertwined with those of the USA? Canada is planning to hike the industrial carbon tax and to further promote EVs while the US is going in the opposite direction.
