I don't quite understand the hate this game gets. Yes, it was far from the deepest SOE hack 'n slash RPG, I still really enjoy this game whenever I play it. Untold Legends has it's start on the PSP, but comes to us from Sony Online Entertainment known for Everquest, and The Champions of Norrath games.
Dark Kingdom is definitely RPG-lite, not having the deeper customization options of other similar games, but as a big fan of Gauntlet Legends, I'm OK with that. Not every RPG has to have deep character customization options, or crafting or stuff like that. Sometimes that kind of stuff get a bit overwhelming, and you just feel like playing a simplified RPG which is the niche Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom fits into.
The hack 'n slash gameplay is fun, and there are some character customization options in the leveling up system, but nothing particularly deep. Shopping for new weapons and armor is handled at the save points, and there is some exploration to be had, but overall, environments are smaller and more streamlined. Dark Kingdom is more of a just pick up and play kind of RPG, but sometimes that's what you want.
Sometimes you can fry your noggin with the absurd amount of crafting and customization options in deeper RPG games like Fallout 4, or even the newly released Starfield to the point that sometimes a more simplistic RPG hits the spot. Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom has more in comment with Gauntlet Legends than Diablo, which is why I enjoy it for what it is. If you are looking for a deep RPG experience, this won't satisfy, however, if you're looking for an easy to pick up and play RPG with some fun coop options, look into this one. Not every game has to be a big ordeal.
