A hurricane carrying an extremely dangerous storm surge made landfall in northwestern Florida as forecasters warned of an “unsurvivable scenario”.

Officials fear Hurricane Helene, which was listed as a Category 4 storm at 11.10pm Eastern time on Thursday (4.10am Friday BST), will leave a trail of widespread destruction as it moves inland through Florida and towards Georgia.
